Rhine Falls & Stein am Rhein

A Rainy Journey North

After breakfast, we set off on a day trip to northern Switzerland, following part of the Grand Tour of Switzerland. The drive itself was quiet and scenic scrolling vineyards, open fields, and small farming villages passing by outside the window.

Our guide, a kind Swiss lady, took care of the group so thoughtfully throughout the journey. She shared little stories along the way, making the ride feel easy and unhurried.

Rhine Falls – Power You Can Feel

By the time we arrived at Rhine Falls, the rain had already started. Umbrellas went up, jackets zipped, but nothing could take away from the first sight of it.

The Rhine Falls, Europe’s largest waterfall, was powerful in a way that’s hard to describe. Around 700,000 litres of water rush over the rocks every second, stretching wide across the river before plunging into the basin below.

We made our way along the viewing paths near Laufen Castle, getting closer step by step. From the panoramic viewpoints and the Belvedere trail, the falls felt almost within reach. The mist rose into the air, carried by the wind, brushing against our faces as we stood there watching.

Even in the rain, we didn’t rush. It was too alive, too loud, too real to just pass by quickly.

A Change of Pace – Stein am Rhein

After the falls, we continued toward Stein am Rhein, passing through the countryside and the town of Schaffhausen, where our guide pointed out the Munot Fortress along the way. When we arrived, everything shifted.

Stein am Rhein felt like stepping into a storybook. The Old Town is known for its beautifully preserved buildings, many decorated with Renaissance frescoes that stretch across entire facades. Standing in front of them, it’s hard not to pause, each one filled with detail, quietly telling stories from another time.

We followed our guide through the old town, learning about these painted buildings and the history behind them. Many of the frescoes date back centuries, and each building has its own character, making the streets feel like an open-air gallery.

The half-timbered houses, the quiet squares, and the soft details all came together in a way that felt calm and timeless.

Evening Light

As the afternoon slowly faded, Stein am Rhein took on a different kind of charm.

The streets grew softer under the evening light. Warm glows from shop windows and small stalls began to stand out against the grey sky. We wandered past little Christmas stalls and paused by a small open fire, where the warmth felt especially comforting in the cold air. Simple moments, but somehow they stayed with us.

A quiet Christmas tree stood in the square, softly lit, adding just enough to the atmosphere without taking over the scene.

Ending the Day Gently

By the time we left, the streets were calm, the lights still glowing behind us.

It had been a day of contrasts, the powerful rush of Rhine Falls in the rain, and the quiet, storybook charm of Stein am Rhein in the evening.
