Up Into the Mountains

With our Innsbruck Card in hand, we started the day on the Nordkette Cable Car, watching the city slowly shrink below us as we climbed higher. The air felt colder, cleaner, and everything became quieter with each stop.

It didn’t take long before Innsbruck looked small beneath us, tucked neatly within the valley, surrounded by mountains on every side.

A Stop at Alpenzoo

Our first stop was Alpenzoo, set right into the mountainside.

It was peaceful, not crowded, and easy to walk through at our own pace. We wandered between indoor and outdoor spaces, fish moving quietly in the aquarium, lynx resting in the shadows, ibex standing steady on rocky slopes, and brown bears slowly going about their day.

There was something calm about it all. Simple, unhurried, and close to nature.

At the same time, it made me pause. Seeing animals in enclosures, even in such a natural setting, brought a different kind of feeling. It made me think about freedom, and how carefully we should step into spaces that belong to them.

Higher to Seegrube

From there, we took a short break for lunch at Alpenzoo, nothing fancy, just a simple, warm meal that felt especially comforting in the cold.

After that, we continued upward to Seegrube.

The view opened wide, the Inn Valley stretching below, mountains rising in every direction. We stood there for a while, warming our hands with a hot drink, just taking it in.

It was one of those views that photos don’t quite capture. You just have to stand there and feel it.

At the Top of Innsbruck

We went even higher on the Nordkette Cable Car to Hafelekar Station, the highest point above Innsbruck. Up here, the landscape felt sharper, brighter, and more exposed.

A short walk along the snowy ridge brought us to a viewpoint that felt endless mountains behind us, sky above, and the city far below. The snow crunched under our feet, the air was crisp, and everything felt wide and open.

A Day That Stays Quietly With You

As we made our way back down, that feeling stayed.

It wasn’t just about going higher. It was about stepping away for a while, and seeing everything from a different perspective.

The Journey Begins

This winter, we explored Austria on a 14-day family trip, travelling through Vienna, Salzburg, Hallstatt, and Innsbruck, some of the most scenic places in the Austrian Alps.

From snow-covered mountains and Christmas markets to historic old towns and easy public transport, Austria turned out to be one of the most family-friendly winter destinations in Europe.

We also made a short stop in Slovakia, before ending the journey in Munich, a place that already felt like home.

Day 1: Arrival in Austria (Dec 7)

We began our Austria winter journey with a 3:15 a.m. flight from Singapore. Somewhere between takeoff and landing, the long hours faded and suddenly, our long-awaited Europe trip felt real.

We arrived in Vienna, Austria around 2:00 PM local time, welcomed by crisp winter air and calm, uncrowded streets.

A smooth airport transfer brought us to Pakat Suites, our base for the next five nights. The check-in process was simple and convenient, we received a code and locker number a day earlier to collect our key cards, making everything quick and contactless.

The suite was spacious with a small balcony, a comfortable place to settle in after the long flight and ease into the start of our Austria itinerary.

Day 2: Vienna Walking Tour (Dec 8)

We started the morning at Belvedere Palace, taking it slow and not rushing into the day. The gardens stretched under a pale winter sky, bare trees, hushed paths, and the palace itself standing with quiet dignity.

I’ve walked through many palaces across Europe, but Belvedere in winter carries a different kind of magic. Without the crowds, you notice the silence, the way footsteps echo, the way the cold air sharpens your senses. It felt less like a tourist stop and more like a gentle introduction to Vienna’s history.

For families, especially those traveling with children, this is a perfect first stop. There’s space to roam, no pressure to hurry, and the kind of calm that lets you ease into the city rather than be overwhelmed by it.

Day 3: Graz Day Trip Itinerary (Dec 9)

A scenic train ride through Semmering brought us to Graz — calm, charming, and quietly different from Vienna.

Day 4 – A Quiet Detour into Slovakia (Dec 10)

Day 4 took us on a day trip from Vienna to Slovakia, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of our Austria winter journey.

We explored a misty countryside castle, walked along riverside ruins, and spent time in Bratislava’s Old Town. It was simple, unhurried, and unexpectedly beautiful.

What we thought would be just a quick detour became a real highlight. Slovakia may not be the first place that comes to mind, but it’s definitely worth the visit.

Day 5 – Schönbrunn Palace (Dec 11)

Day 5 in Vienna started with a visit to Schönbrunn Palace, one of the most iconic landmarks in Austria. Even before entering, the palace stood quietly impressive its soft golden tones under the winter sky setting the mood for the morning.

Inside, the rooms were rich with detail, ornate ceilings, chandeliers, and carefully preserved spaces that reflected the lives of the Habsburgs. Our guide shared stories of Empress Maria Theresa and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi), giving a deeper look into life behind the grandeur.

It wasn’t just about beauty there was a sense of structure, duty, and history in every room.

After the tour, we stepped out into the palace gardens.

Winter had stripped the greenery, but the space still felt grand and calm. Wide paths, open views, and the long stretch leading toward the Gloriette gave everything a quiet balance.

We walked slowly, taking it in without rushing, just enjoying the space and the moment.
We ended the visit with a walk back, laughing at small things, staying close, and letting the day unfold naturally.

Day 6 – Salzburg (Dec 12)

Day 6 started with a train ride from Vienna to Salzburg on the ÖBB Railjet. The journey was smooth and comfortable, with scenic countryside views slowly replacing the city, a relaxing start to our Salzburg trip.

By late morning, we arrived in Salzburg and checked into Master Mirabell Serviced Apartments, a convenient and well-located base for exploring the city over the next few days.

We kept the day light. A short walk around the neighbourhood, our first cozy meal, and a gentle introduction to Salzburg city. No fixed plans, just settling in and taking it slow. As evening came, the city softened. Lights reflected along the river, and the streets felt calm and welcoming. It wasn’t a packed itinerary, but it felt just right, an easy and meaningful start to our time in Salzburg.

Day 7 – The Song of music (Dec 13)

Day 7 took us across Salzburg’s Sound of Music filming locations, where wide open views, misty landscapes, and quiet lakes made every stop feel special.

From familiar scenes to the calm beauty of Mondsee, the day was simple, scenic, and unexpectedly memorable.

Day 8 – Hallstatt, Austria (Dec 14)

Day 8 brought us to Hallstatt, Austria, where still waters, mountain views, and quiet streets made the whole village feel like a postcard.

From lakeside walks to simple moments in the village, the day was calm, scenic, and truly memorable.

Day 9 – Untersberg, Austria (Dec 15)

A day trip to Untersberg Mountain from Salzburg — snow-covered paths, clear skies, and views that stretch across the Alps.

Day 10 – Innsbruck Arrival (Dec 16)

We left Salzburg mid-morning, taking the ÖBB train to Innsbruck. The journey was smooth and comfortable, with mountain views slowly unfolding along the way.

By early afternoon, we arrived and checked into Daxburg Apartments, a comfortable base just a short walk from the old town. After settling in, we headed out for an easy walk through the city centre.

We kept the evening light. Picked up some groceries, had a quiet dinner, and let the day end naturally.

A new city, a slower pace, and a very easy start to our time in Innsbruck.

Day 11 – Ambras Castle, Innsbruck (Dec 17)

A quiet visit to Ambras Castle in Innsbruck, filled with art, history, and a love story that stayed with us.

From grand halls to peaceful gardens, it was a calm and meaningful day, ending with a gentle evening back in the old town.

Day 12 – Nordkette Cable Car & Alpenzoo (Dec 18)

Day 12 took us up the Nordkette Cable Car in Innsbruck, where snowy peaks and wide alpine views stretched far beyond the city. From Alpenzoo to Hafelekar, it was a calm, scenic day high above the Inn Valley.

Day 13 – Swarovski Crystal Worlds, Wattens (Dec 19)

Our last day in Austria felt a little different. We spent it at Swarovski Crystal Worlds, where light, art, and imagination take over. From the iconic Giant to the dreamy Chambers of Wonder, it felt less like a visit and more like walking through a world built on creativity.

Day 14 – Innsbuck to Munich (Dec 20)

We left Innsbruck in the morning, taking a train back to Munich, a place that already felt familiar to us.

As the mountains slowly faded behind us, the journey felt calm and unhurried. Arriving in Munich was easy, the same streets, the same quiet surroundings, and the same Munich City West Apartments we stayed in before.

We spent the rest of the day simply settling back in. A short walk around the neighbourhood, a quick stop at the supermarket, and a quiet dinner back in the apartment.

Nothing special, but it felt just right, like returning to a place that already knew us.

Day 15 – Munich - The English Garden (Dec 21)

We found ourselves back at the English Garden, a place we wanted to see again after missing it since our last visit.

It felt just as we remembered, quiet, open, and easy. The river flowed gently, swans drifted past, and the winter air made everything feel calm and still.

We walked slowly, without a plan. A simple day, revisiting a place we already loved.

Day 16 – Munich - Nymphenburg Palace (Dec 22)

Our last full day in Munich was quiet and unhurried.

We spent it at Nymphenburg Palace, walking slowly through the grounds and along the still waters. The winter sky was soft and grey, the kind that makes everything feel calm and reflective.

It felt like the right way to end the trip, gentle, simple, and just enough.

Day 17 – Flight Back Home (Dec 23)

Our final day began quietly.

We left the hotel in the morning, taking one last look at the streets that had started to feel familiar. There was no rush, just a slow goodbye.

As the plane lifted off, the city slowly disappeared beneath the clouds. The journey didn’t end all at once, it settled gently, like something you carry with you.
