Morning by the Main River
Our second day in Germany began with a quiet December morning in Frankfurt. The Main River was calm, lined with bare winter trees, and the crisp air felt refreshing.
Römerberg and the Old Town
We joined a walking tour near Römerberg, the heart of Frankfurt’s old town. The square, with its half‑timbered houses and festive stalls left from the Christmas market, felt like stepping into a storybook.
Historic Streets and Landmarks
We began at Haus Wertheim, the only original half‑timbered house to survive the war. Surrounded by festive stalls and winter crowds, it felt like a small piece of old Frankfurt still holding its ground.
From there, we walked to St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral (Kaiserdom). Its deep red stone stood strong against the grey winter sky, and inside, the high ceilings and stained glass created a calm, reflective space.
Along the Main River
Crossing toward the Main River, we found rows of historic buildings lining the banks. The blend of old architecture and modern life felt balanced.
At the Karmeliter Cloister, fresco‑covered walls stretched across the space, detailed and full of stories. The atmosphere was calm, almost hidden away from the city outside.
Goethe’s House
Walking further, we passed Goethe’s House, simple on the outside but meaningful as the birthplace of one of Germany’s most celebrated writers. It added another layer of history to the same walk.
By midday, we reached Kleinmarkthalle, Frankfurt’s lively indoor market. After hours of walking, a simple sandwich was all we needed, warm, satisfying, and just right for the cold.
Memorials and Remembrance
The afternoon carried a heavier mood. At the Book Burning Memorial and in the Jewish Quarter, history felt close. The Holocaust Memorial Wall and Stolpersteine plaques made us pause, reflecting on stories of loss and remembrance.
A Day That Stays With You
Some walks are light. Some walks are heavy. This one was both.
From storybook squares and riverside calm to memorials that made us pause, our Frankfurt walking tour carried moments we’ll remember long after the day ended.
