A Day Trip to Heidelberg
We left Frankfurt early for a day trip to Heidelberg, one of Germany’s most charming historic towns. Our guide, a friendly elderly gentleman, made the journey feel personal and engaging right from the start.
Heidelberg Castle
Our first stop was the iconic Heidelberg Castle, perched high above the old town. Even in the soft winter light, the red sandstone ruins stood striking against the sky. From the terrace, the view stretched across the Neckar River and pastel-colored houses below. Inside, we discovered the famous Great Heidelberg Tun, one of the largest wine barrels in the world, a reminder of the castle’s centuries-old traditions.
Old Town and Old Bridge
We then made our way down into the old town, crossing the Old Bridge, where the view back toward the castle felt like a postcard. The cobblestone streets were lined with shops, cafés, and Christmas market stalls, adding warmth and color to the chilly winter day
A Simple Afternoon
We kept our afternoon simple—pretzels, coffee, and a quick stop at a souvenir shop. By late afternoon, we returned to Frankfurt, carrying with us the quiet charm of Heidelberg, a town where history and everyday life blend effortlessly.
This was just one of our favourite stops. You can read more about our full Germany winter journey here.
