A Different Kind of Day

Day 13, 19 December, felt completely different from the days before. Less mountains, more sparkle and imagination. We made our way to Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens, curious but not quite sure what to expect. The Kristallwelten sign pointed us across an open field, the Swarovski buildings just visible in the valley below, snow-capped Alps standing behind them in the clear morning light.

The Giant, a grass-covered face fountain at the entrance to Swarovski Crystal Worlds The Giant, keeping watch over the entrance.

The moment we arrived, the iconic Giant welcomed us — a grass-covered face built into a hillside, water trickling from its mouth into a pond below, quiet, mysterious, and somehow a little magical. It already felt like we were stepping into another world, and we hadn't even gone inside yet.

Inside the Chambers of Wonder

Inside, the experience unfolded slowly. Each room felt different — some dark and quiet, lit only by a single spotlit installation, others bright and almost overwhelming, walls and ceilings entirely given over to crystal. Crystals reflected light in every direction, turning simple spaces into something immersive and dreamlike. In one room, thousands of tiny points of light seemed to hang suspended in the dark, like standing inside a slowly turning galaxy.

We didn't rush. We walked slowly, letting each installation speak for itself. It wasn't just about crystals — it was about how light, design, and creativity come together to create something you can actually feel. Some rooms felt almost endless, like standing inside light itself. Others were playful, unexpected, even a little surreal — a crystal-encrusted piano here, a towering feathered costume there — the kind of places where you don't just look, you pause and take it in.

Back to the Gardens

Stepping outside felt like coming back to earth. The gardens were calm and open, with art installations placed gently across the landscape — a mirrored sculpture catching the winter light here, a quiet bench tucked between hedges there. After the intensity inside, everything here felt softer — fresh air, open sky, and space to just walk without thinking too much. Our daughter ran ahead along the paths while we let the cold air clear our heads after all that glitter.

Family Travel Tip

Go in the morning for a quieter experience inside, and don't rush through the Chambers of Wonder. It's an easy, relaxed half-day trip from Innsbruck by direct bus — no transfers needed.

A Simple, Good Lunch

We stopped at Daniels Kristallwelten for lunch. Simple, but really good — warm, comforting dishes and a quiet space to slow down for a bit, with big windows looking out over the same gardens we'd just wandered through. The apple strudel stood out: light, not too sweet, and just right, dusted with icing sugar and served still warm. A small break, but one that made the day feel complete.

Ending the Day Gently

We spent a bit more time walking through the gardens before heading back, the light turning gold and then grey as afternoon slid into evening. There was no rush, just a slow walk and the last light of the day catching on the crystal shop windows as we passed. It felt calm in a different way from the mountains we'd climbed on other days, but just as nice — proof that not every good day in Austria needed snow and altitude to feel special.
